Years earlier, clinicians at PMC, like in many hospitals, depended on paper charts. Cabinets across departments were filled with thick folders, color-coded tabs, and handwritten notes.

In the past, searching for a patient’s history involved leafing through stacks of paper. Misfiling, or worse, losing, a patient’s chart could lead to delay or error in treatment.

Flash forward to present times, and we have a new world. PMC today stores all of its information digitally through electronic health records (EHRs). They are quicker, more secure, and easier to modify.

A physician can view your most recent lab tests, medications, and past diagnoses with just a few mouse-clicks, regardless of whether these were made many years earlier.

A Real-Life Look at Change

It was just a conversation I have a clear memory of with a nurse at PMC about two years ago. She had been there for more than twenty years. She confessed that, when the hospital initially implemented EHRs, it was overwhelming.

“There were times that I wished to return to pen and paper,” she chuckled. “Now I don’t think I could function without it.”

She spoke of a patient who had been brought in unconscious after a road accident. Due to the digital system of the hospital, the emergency response team accessed his entire medical history in a matter of seconds. They could view his allergies and medications, as well as a cardiologist’s note.

Certain employees pushed back against change. Others had difficulty adapting to new systems. Even there were times that technology malfunctioned.

Yet, through it all, growth was PMC’s focus. Feedback was heard, systems were revised, and their mission never strayed: to provide safe, high-quality care.
